What is Reiki?
It is a treatment modality which you can receive and it is also levels of workshops to learn to treat yourself with Reiki, as well as to become a Practitioner to a Master and a Teacher.
Reiki is an ancient healing method rediscovered in Japan in early 1900 by Dr Mikao Usui.
In 1936 the gift of Reiki was brought to the West by Mrs Hawayo Takata, a Hawaiian woman of Japanese origin. Since then Reiki has spread worldwide, and its uses are becoming more and more recognized – from homes to hospitals.
Reiki is a universal energy— or life force—that exists in and around our bodies. During a treatment, the practitioner channels the flow of this energy through their hands, so healing can take place.
The ‘Usui System of Natural Healing’ balances and strengthens the body’s energy, promoting its ability to heal itself.
Reiki is harmless and can complement other forms of alternative therapies.
Reiki does not diagnose, prescribe nor promise to cure. However, it can be beneficial in treating injuries and illness: Sports injuries, cuts and burns, internal diseases, emotional disorders and stress related illnesses to mention but a few.
Reiki is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.

Barbara Carlton was trained and initiated to Reiki, as a Practitioner and then to Master/Teacher to:
‘THE USUI SYSTEM OF NATURAL HEALING‘ by Elspeth Walker, ‘Reiki Master/Teacher’ Edinburgh, Scotland and Walid Ghoneim an Egyptian Reiki Master / Teacher, Alexandria, Egypt. In 2006 Gopal Shrestha, a Reiki Master / Teacher from Kathmandu, Nepal visited Rochester for over 9 month and worked with Barbara and her students, he also attuned Barbara to Master / Teacher.
Barbara worked for many years at the Community Health Project in Edinburgh, Scotland. The organization offered the community a wide range of alternative therapies, including Reiki. Barbara felt particularly drawn to Reiki, as it can help all conditions, mental and physical. Having practiced on friends and family, Barbara began offering Reiki at a greatly reduced price to those that could not have afforded it otherwise.
Seeing the difference it can make to people’s lives Barbara felt compelled to go further in her studies. She attended classes of Walid Ghoneim an Egyptian Reiki master in Edinburgh. He took her back to the original roots of Reiki. With his vast knowledge of Reiki history, methods, and experience he greatly furthered her knowledge and abilities.
In June 2002 Barbara was initiated to Karuna Reiki Master KR# 84288 by William Lee Rand, the founder. She is fully certified by The International Center for Reiki Training (ICRT), Southfield, MI, USA. The graduation and initiation took place in Glastonbury and Stonehenge, England. Barbara is also registered with Reiki Kids to teach children Reiki using their method of teaching.
Since 2003 Barbara has been teaching Reiki and Karuna Reiki® at The Reiki Healing Center. During this time she has taught almost exclusively in western upstate NY, and then expanded her classes into North/West MA. In Spring of 2016 Barbara became Holy Fire Usui Reiki Master and Teacher with Brian Lucchesi Master and Teacher. She teaches all levels of Reiki and many other classes. Her classes are planned many months ahead which offers you the opportunity to start paying early up to over a six months period.
In 2008 Barbara became qualified as Certified ‘Advanced Healer in Energy Therapies’ with Kathie Greene, Tonawanda. It entailed many extra Topics and Modalities on top of Reiki. So many years later and after so many enquiries Barbara offers classes to make you an “Advanced Healer in Energy Therapies” see’Classes’.
Barbara is a Reiki Master and Teacher, teaching to and above ‘International Standards’ since 2003.

Usui Reiki Classes
Usui Reiki Level 1 (1 Day)
Usui Reiki level 1 is the foundation of your Reiki training. This focuses on the history of Reiki, defining Reiki, how to work with Reiki, and an attunement to Reiki level I. The difference between Barbara and other teachers is that she only teaches in person and in small groups. In smaller groups you can receive the right instruction just how you need it. With the hands on instruction you will get plenty of hands on experience so you can go home to practice on yourself and your loved ones. Practice is the key to this stage of training. Usui Reiki Level I and Usui Reiki Level II classes can be taken close together. A 21 day waiting period provides you the benefits of practice time recommended to develop your Reiki skills and to develop a daily Reiki practice. You will receive your Usui Reiki Level 1 Attunement, Certificate, Manual, and ongoing Reiki support.
Usui Reiki Level 2 (1 Day)
We will deepen your level of understanding of Reiki through the exploration of symbols and the appropriate attunements you will qualify as a ‘Certified Practitioner’. The focus of Reiki II is on helping you become a more knowledgeable and confident practitioner. A big part of Reiki II is deepening and widening your understanding and connection to Reiki. This is often overlooked by those that teach Reiki II over one day. Barbara feels all potential Reiki II students should know that Reiki II needs more than one day to adequately cover all the topics and skills required to be a proficient Reiki II practitioner.
Barbara has been teaching Reiki II over two days since 2003, just as she was taught by her Master Teachers in 1998 unlike Internationally recognized Master teacher William Rand who just started requiring an extra day of training. Barbara believes 2 days of training is required to make you a skilled and confident practitioner. This is important as it is the dedicated practitioner who serves the public that needs those extra skills.
Day begins with a review of Reiki I with a twist. The twist is that you learn more about Reiki, how you act as a vessel for Reiki and how the Chakra system can be used to explain the movement of Reiki energy through your body. You will also learn how light, color, sound, and crystals can be incorporated into a Reiki treatment. This leads to understanding how the auditory component of the symbols can be added into treatments. All of this deepens and widens your connection to Reiki.
It is about guidance on becoming a practitioner, setting up a practice and rules that will apply, then learning the meaning of symbols and using symbols as an extra tool for healing. Symbols call on extra energy for specific purposes in a treatment. Learning how and when to use them correctly is a skill that can take a life time to master, but a foundation for their use can be laid if your training is thorough and includes plenty of hands on experience. This is something the “The Reiki Healing Center” takes very serious. Our goal is to help you become a knowledgeable and confident practitioner while we strive to maintain the highest standards in Reiki education without cutting any corners in your training. This is how we started in 2003 and continue despite so many teachers now offering Reiki II in one day. As you can see there is too much to learn, to cover it all in just one day let alone two. Reiki II day I and day II do not need to be taken one after the other, but we prefer that they are taken close together. These three days, or 24 hours of training in Reiki I and Reiki II make you a competent practitioner. Enough training has been given to you to be a competent and officially recognized healer. You will receive your Usui Reiki Level 2 Practitioner Attunement, Certificate, Manual, and ongoing Reiki support.
Usui Reiki Master (1 day)
(also called Advanced Reiki Training, ‘ART’, ‘Reiki Master Practitioner’ or ‘Reiki IIIa’)
Is all about deepening your connection to Reiki through the personal empowerment symbolized by the fourth symbol. It is the empowerment found in self knowledge and the wisdom to utilize that knowledge with grace. If you have spent the time doing the following: practicing giving treatments to all (yourself, others, animals, & plants), just sitting with it so you may just experience it, and by incorporating all that you have learned into the fabric of your being then you will be ready for this stage of development. This stage is no easy task for you are making a final commitment to Reiki and its practice than you ever have before because it is a commitment to your personal spiritual growth. Should you go forward you will be rewarded with insights into how all that is taught in Reiki is interrelated and how it is applied to life. While experts in education define an expert as having spent over 10,000 hours studying their chosen field, the minimum recommended waiting period before taking this class is six months. Barbara’s approachability and willingness to answer questions helps her students prepare for this stage of development. This is often absent if you take your class online or it can prove too difficult to communicate over the phone. There is no substitute for in person instruction and it is why Barbara holds many different support groups for her students while asking only for small donations to cover her costs. You will receive your Usui Reiki Master Practitioner Certificate, Manual, and ongoing Reiki support.
Usui Reiki Teacher (1 day) (‘Reiki Master Teacher’ or ‘Reiki Teacher’ or ‘Reiki IIIb’)
Is the class that signals to the world around you that you have accepted the responsibility of helping others on their Reiki journey. You will know if and when the time is right to take on this step. While no single class can ever prepare you for this sacred responsibility it can help you understand why certain things were taught when they were, the mechanics of the attunement process including the preparation of sacred space, usage of the final symbols in attunements, and how to attune. This title marks the last gate you will pass through on your Reiki journey but not your final destination. As time passes you will continue to deepen and widen your connection with Reiki. You will receive your Usui Reiki Master/Teacher Certificate, Manual, and ongoing Reiki support.

Karuna Reiki®
Karuna Reiki® is an addition to the Usui Reiki system. It is not relevant which lineage you come from or who taught you Reiki. Karuna Reiki® can be taught as soon as 6 months after you have taken the Usui Reiki Master level.
You will be taught four Karuna Reiki® symbols for level I and four more for level II. These symbols are used for specific areas that affect the mind, the body, and the spirit. These symbols have been likened to surgical equipment when compared to the standard Usui Reiki symbols. The third and final level, the teacher level, is required if you want to become a Karuna Reiki® Teacher and it carries with it the same level commitment as the Reiki Master/Teacher of regular Reiki.

The Meaning of Karuna
Karuna is a Sanskrit word and is used in Hinduism and Buddhism. It is translated to mean any action that is taken to diminish the suffering of others and could also be translated as “compassionate action.” When individuals experience enlightenment, they report that all beings are known as one. Therefore, it is natural to extend compassionate action or Karuna to everyone without distinction because we are all one. As we help others and aid them in their healing process, all beings benefit. Because of the oneness of all beings, it is understood that Karuna is not only extended to others out of love, but also because it is an entirely logical thing to do. In the same way that you would want to heal your own wounds, you would also want the wounds of others to heal. It is also stated in the Buddhist literature that Karuna must be accompanied by parjna or wisdom in order to have the right effect.
Karuna is the motivating quality of all enlightened beings who are working to end suffering on Earth. They continually send an unlimited amount of healing energy and guidance to us, but not all are receptive to it. As you develop Karuna in yourself, not only are you helping others, but you also become more receptive to the Karuna that is being sent by all enlightened beings. Thus your healing is quickened as well.
Karuna Reiki® opens you to work more closely with all enlightened beings. This includes those enlightened ones who are physically present as well as those in spirit.
The Karuna Reiki® Class
This class is for anyone who has had Reiki Master training. It is complete with two levels, two attunements, four master symbols and eight treatment symbols. We have experimented with and taught this system since 1994 and have found it to be effective and powerful. In fact, most students find it more powerful than Usui Reiki! The energy has a more definite feeling to it. It works on the emotional and spiritual levels and also can help one become more grounded. Those who receive the attunements report experiences with their guides, angels, and higher self and feel the healing presence of other enlightened beings.
A brief description of the four Karuna Reiki® I symbols is given here: The first symbol prepares the client for deep healing and is useful with past life issues. It helps release karma and deeply seated issues on the cellular level. The second symbol heals deeply and can be used to breakup the negative patterns we unconsciously use to insulate ourselves from the truth, thus shattering delusion and denial. It heals the shadow self. The third symbol fills the person with love and restores balance. The fourth symbol completes the treatment by bringing the client back into the body and grounding. The Karuna II symbols are of a higher vibration and more powerful. They help connect directly with the Higher Self and work on a deeper level. While they have specific purposes discussed in class, the experience of their energy allows intuitive guidance in their use.
Both levels of Karuna Reiki® and both attunements will be given as well as instruction and practice on the use of all twelve symbols. You will be able to teach all four levels of Karuna Reiki®, two practitioner levels and two master levels after taking this class.
Lots of practice time is included for giving treatments, using the symbols and for learning the attunement processes.
We will also be doing meditations and using chanting and toning with Karuna Reiki®.
Come network with other Reiki Masters. This is an exciting workshop with lots of dedicated, high energy people.
A certificate and a 45 page manual is included with in depth descriptions of each symbol and each attunement process.
Practicing and Teaching Karuna Reiki®
The symbols can be used just like the Reiki symbols when giving Reiki treatments. When teaching, you can be taught all three levels in one 3 day weekend as described, or one day a time. To take Karuna Reiki® level 1 and Karuna Reiki® level 2 you must have been a Reiki Master for over six months. For the level of becoming Karuna Reiki® Master and Teacher you must have been Reiki Teacher for six months and over. A requirement for taking any of the Karuna practitioner levels is Reiki Master or what is also called Reiki 3a as using the Usui master symbol for treatments enables the student to hold more healing energy and thus get greater benefit from the Karuna training. It is important that the student realize that Karuna training is not a substitute for Usui Reiki, but the next step after.

Holy Fire Reiki
What is Holy Fire Reiki? A New Reiki Energy
Holy Fire Reiki is a new form of Reiki being introduced by the ICRT. It is both powerful and gentle and provides purification, healing, empowerment, and guidance. Holy Fire Reiki energy is is a different frequency of Reiki energy. It is not better or worse than other forms of Reiki. Many people appreciate it’s qualities. Some of things experienced by Holy Fire Reiki students are:
• Works continuously even when they are not thinking about it.
• Spontaneously healing issues as they come up.
• Always respects free will.
• Releases worry and replaces it with a sense of safety in a most pronounced way.
• One of the more wonderful effects is a feeling of being loved. This is a deep and refined feeling that is very nurturing.

Barbara Carlton, the founder of ReikiForChildren.com, is a member of the International Association of Reiki Professionals. She teaches to the standards of the International Center for Reiki Training which is run by William Rand who is also the founder of Karuna Reiki®. She has over 14 years of experience teaching Usui Reiki and 12 years of experience as a Karuna Reiki® Master. Barbara has also been teaching kids of all ages about Reiki. She is the only recognized teacher of the Reiki Kids program in the US.
